TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WCTV) — One of the cyber world’s newest growing trends has finally made its way to Tallahassee. NFTs, also known as Non Fungible Tokens, are a growing commodity and local custom shoe company The Canvas Project is launching its first NFT.
The group works with local influencers and organizations to engage the community.
If you asked people what an NFT was six months ago, most wouldn’t be sure what to tell you. But The Canvas Project’s founder, Jim Sherwood, says it appears in various art forms.
“It’s a digital asset and it can be an audio file like a song, it could be a video file, it can be a JPEG and it’s a number of things that an NFT can actually be,” Sherwood explained.
Last week, Sherwood and The Canvas Project released their first NFT in the form of Ozzy the Alien, a trademark for the business and something he hopes will spark more interest.
“What’s cool is that with an Ozzy the Alien, you get special clothing that’s color-coded specifically for your NFT,” Sherwood said. “It’s numbered because all NFTs are numbered, and you also get custom sneakers within the NFT. And all of those things will come with the NFT.”
Eddie Gonzalez Loumiet, CEO of Ruvos and Launch Tally, works with Sherwood and says this platform can be used in a variety of ways.
“You know about blockchain technology, and not only are we necessarily talking about art here, as Jim mentioned, but it could be used in healthcare, banking, and other industries,” Gonzalez shared with Loumiet. “And so this is a great way to get your feet wet and learn what people in other big cities might be talking about, but there’s no reason we can’t talk about it here at the 850.”
Also joining the movement is FSU basketball legend and current Utah Jazz guard Trent Forrest, saying he didn’t want to pass up the opportunity.
“Seeing the creativity that people are putting into developing these NFTs feels kind of interesting, and hearing more about it kind of got me hooked,” Forrest said.
All members of this NFT group become part of an exclusive community hoping to share a creative space.
“Through these kinds of diverse dynamics of people, we can do things as a whole or as a group for everyone who owns these NFTs, or we can connect and do things individually, or three people can come together,” Sherwood said. “It’s cool because it’s an opportunity to connect with people that you might not necessarily be able to connect with.”
Forrest hopes many more people will follow the trend.
I just want people in my area back home and in Tallahassee to see that this is something that’s growing and getting bigger and bigger,” Forrest said.
A madness that the group says will take off whether you’re on board or not.
