People who are obsessed with celebrities are less intelligent, study says

Are you obsessed with Taylor Swift or can’t help but keep up with the Kardashians? You’re not alone, but a recent study suggests you might not be smart.

A study published last year in BMC Psychology claims that people who are “obsessed with celebrities” are less intelligent.

Researchers asked 1,763 Hungarian adults to take part in a 30-word vocabulary test and a digit symbol substitution test before asking them to fill out an attitude towards celebrities questionnaire to gauge their interest in celebrities.

Statements in the questionnaire included: “I often feel compelled to learn about the personal habits of my favorite celebrity,” with participants able to choose a yes or no answer.

Other statements that appeared in the study included: “I obsess over details of my favorite celebrity’s life” and “If I were lucky enough to meet my favorite celebrity and he/she asked me to do something illegal to “Doing him a favor” would probably do it.

The study concluded that when both literacy and numeracy skills were considered, “there is a direct link between celebrity worship and poorer performance on cognitive tests.”

However, the results should be viewed with caution.

The study’s researchers admitted that it was difficult to figure out why the celebrity fans performed poorly on the cognitive tests.

It could be because they have more difficulty in this area or simply expended more mental energy thinking about the top stars.

Speaking to PsyPost, the researchers said: “Future studies should seek further support for our suggestion that the cognitive effort invested in maintaining attachment to a favorite celebrity may affect the person’s performance on tasks, attention, and other cognitive functions.” require skills.”

“Although our research doesn’t prove that developing a strong obsession with your favorite celebrity causes you to perform worse on cognitive tests, it does suggest that it might be wise to carefully monitor feelings about it.” [them].”
