Farewell to a legend. Tributes to Olivia Newton-John have flowed following the actress’ death at the age of 73 after a long battle with cancer.
“My dearest Olivia, you have made all of our lives so much better.” John Travolta wrote via Instagram on Monday, August 8, after news of his former co-star’s death broke. “Their impact was incredible. I love you so much. See you on the street and we’ll all be together again. Yours from the moment I saw you and forever! Your Danny, your John!”
The late actress and the 68-year-old pulp fiction star appeared together in 1978’s Grease, playing Sandy Olsson and Danny Zuko, an ill-fated high school couple. The duo remained friendly for years after the film’s debut, though they were almost strangers when they first kissed on screen.
“I was obviously nervous,” Newton-John told Us Weekly in January 2021. Time together.”
The “Physical” singer’s family announced the news of her death on Monday, noting that she “passed peacefully asleep” at her home in Southern California. “We ask everyone to respect the privacy of the family at this very difficult time,” Newton-John’s husband said. John Ostlingshe wrote in a statement shared via Facebook and Instagram.
Kathy Griffin, which the Xanadu actress tapped in 2009 for an appearance on her D-list reality show My Life, paid tribute to the late star via Twitter. “Olivia Newton-John rolled EVERYTHING ❤️🙏💔,” the comedian, 61, wrote alongside a clip from the episode showing Griffin and Carson Kressley Grammy winner’s ribs on her Australian heritage.
Newton-John’s death came after a years-long battle with breast cancer. The Glee alum was first diagnosed in 1992 when she underwent a partial mastectomy and reconstruction surgery. Her illness returned for a third time in 2013 and 2017.
In January 2021, the American Music Award winner told Us that she’s “doing really well” amid her ongoing health issues. “Plant medicine has been incredibly healing for me,” she explained at the time. “But I think it’s just about keeping a positive attitude and believing that I’m going to be fine and talking to my body and doing whatever I can to support myself emotionally and mentally, huh is probably the most important part.”
