Since 1984, the MTV Video Music Awards have honored the biggest artists of the year. The 40th VMAs, taking place Tuesday at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey, will be hosted by Nicki Minaj and feature a brand new category: Show of the Summer. Shakira receives the coveted Video Vanguard Award, while P Diddy is honored with the Global Icon Award.
For the first time, women dominate the Artist of the Year category. Taylor Swift, Beyoncé, Doja Cat, Nicki Minaj, Karol G and Shakira are all in the running for one of the night’s biggest awards.
