Kate Middleton’s Uncle Joins Celebrity Big Brother, Shares First Meeting Prince William

Kate Middleton's uncle opens up about his first encounter with the future King of England.

In a new advert for the upcoming season of Celebrity Big Brother UK, the Princess of Wales' uncle Gary Goldsmith – who will appear in season 23, hosts AJ Odudu and Will Best announced on Monday – spoke about his niece and the first time he met Prince William.

“She’s just perfect,” Goldsmith, 58, said of Kate in the short clip. “When I first met William, Catherine was cooking and William said, 'Hello, would you like a cup of tea?'”

“Pretty normal,” Goldsmith recalled with a laugh.

Kensington Palace had no comment when reached.

The London businessman has previously been outspoken about portrayals of the royal family in the media. In January, he commented on The Crown's portrayal of his sister and her family, calling parts of the Netflix show “ridiculous and fantastic.”

“I really enjoyed the first few episodes and the first season of The Crown, but it seems like you just drift into this fantasy world,” Goldsmith said on the podcast “The Crown: Fact or Fiction.” “There are so many parts of it that I don't agree with and I think the narrative and trying to grab headlines and reach an audience. So when it started getting ridiculous and fantastic, it was very difficult to watch, so I stopped.”

Goldsmith also took a moment to address his previous controversies in the Celebrity Big Brother UK spot.

“I've often read that people think I'm a little bad boy,” he said. “It would be nice to set the record straight, but screwing people over is probably my favorite hobby. Every part of me is full of disaster and danger.”

“I'm an absolute nightmare to live with,” he joked, adding, “There's a reason I've had four wives.”

The brother of the princess's mother, Carole Middleton, caused controversy after he was arrested in 2017 for attacking his fourth and current wife, Julie-Ann, during an argument outside their London home. According to prosecutors, the two argued after a night of drinking and Goldsmith hit his wife, causing her to hit her head on the floor.

According to the Independent, Goldsmith pleaded guilty, was fined £5,000 (or about $6,345) and given a 12-month sentence with 20 rehabilitation sessions.

Goldsmith attended both Princess Kate's wedding to Prince William in 2011 and Pippa Middleton's wedding to James Matthews in May 2017.

In the Big Brother spot, Goldsmith admitted that it was the one reality show he thought he would never do.

“I watched Big Brother – that was the only show I said I would never do,” he finished, before letting out a bird’s cry.

The businessman will join fellow contestants Sharon Osbourne, Louis Walsh, former Love Island winner Ekin-Su, Netflix Heartstopper star Bradley Riches and others for the new, revamped ITV series.

The new season of Celebrity Big Brother UK started on ITV on Monday.
