Julia Roberts, Floyd Mayweather and more American celebrities who support Manchester United

Manchester United is one of the best supported football clubs in the world.

No other football team in this country benefits from such a global following and this was evident during their tour of Australia in 2022. For their trip ahead of the 2023 season, Erik ten Hag’s side will visit the United States to prepare for another season in the Premier League.

While game schedules for the tour have yet to be announced, this could be an opportunity for some of the Reds’ celebrity fans to catch their team in action in the United States. With that in mind, MEN Sport took a look at five American celebrities supporting United.

Julia Roberts

Following mid-week revelations from Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola, it seems only right to start with the actress, best known for her roles in Pretty Woman and Erin Brockovich. Roberts visited Manchester back in 2016 and opted for a guided tour of Old Trafford rather than visiting the Etihad Stadium.

It was unclear until Tuesday night just how upset Guardiola was by this, but his comments seem to show this has reached him. He explained: “Whatever happens in the Champions League this year, if I win, even if we win this Champions League three times in a row, I will be a failure.

“I have three idols in my life: Michael Jordan, Tiger Woods and Julia Roberts. These are my three idols.

“For obvious reasons Michael Jordan and Tiger Woods and also Julia Roberts. Julia Roberts came to Manchester not in the 80s and 90s when [United] They won title after title with Sir Alex Ferguson.

“It came at a time when we were better than United over the last four or five years. She was visiting Man United, she didn’t come to see us so we won’t be even if I win the Champions League compared because Julia Roberts came to Manchester and didn’t visit us – my idol.”

Megan Fox

From one actor to another, Fox is best known for her role in the Transformers movies. However, it seems that she is also a huge United fan and even has a favorite player.

In the 2009/10 season, Fox was spotted wearing a United shirt on the red carpet. But her support for Javier Hernandez goes even further after she was spotted in Los Angeles wearing a tailored shirt paying tribute to Chicharito.

Floyd Mayweather

Mayweather’s support for the United States may not be as staunch as those above, but he has nonetheless pledged his allegiance to the Reds. In an interview with Rio Ferdinand for BT Sport, the boxer was asked if he preferred United or City.

He replied: “Who has the better record? Who has the most championships?

“[United], well, that’s who we rock with, baby I have yet to go to a soccer game, I’m waiting to go to a soccer game.

“One day I want to go to one of the biggest football games in the world.” Back in 2007, Mayweather even showed up for a pre-fight press conference with City supporter Ricky Hatton, wearing a United shirt, to try and get inside the Manchester-born fighter’s mind.

Justin Timberlake

The multi-Grammy-winning singer has previously declared his support for United after becoming good friends with ex-Reds striker Alan Smith. In 2007, Timberlake said, “I’m a red guy.

“I’m friends with Smithy so he’s my favorite player but [Cristiano] Ronaldo isn’t bad either. i really like [Wayne] Roney too.

“Smithy got me some tickets so I went to see the home game against West Ham.”

Rey Mysterio

WWE Superstar Rey Mysterio had the opportunity to achieve a lifelong goal for many United fans by attending the Reds’ training camp while they were in LA in 2018. The former world heavyweight champion posed for photos with many of the United squad including boss Jose Mourinho and Scott McTominay.

Goaltender David de Gea also presented Mysterio with a jersey with the number 619 on the back, a nod to his famous finishing move at Wrestling Company. After visiting on Instagram, Mysterio said: “Thank you David de Gea for meeting us today.

“Was a pleasure to exchange gifts. I hope you enjoy the custom made De Gea mask. Thank you for the hospitality Manchester United.”
