Since Taylor Swift Being extremely talented at writing music that her fans can relate to, she has become one of the most celebrated singers of her generation. In truth, for all Swift’s accomplishments, it feels like she’s gotten almost as much attention for her feuds with the likes of Scooter Braun and Katy Perry.
Now that it’s been a while since reports surfaced that Swift was dating The 1975’s Matty Healy, her fans are learning more about him. As it turns out, just like Swift, Healy has a long history of feuding with his fellow artists.
6 Harry Styles, Ice Spice, Doja Cat and Pink probably don’t like Matty Healy
When Matty Healy appeared on The Adam Friedland Show, some of his statements about rapper Ice Spice made a lot of people very angry. While speaking of Ice Spice in a mocking accent, Healy called her an “Inuit Spice Girl,” a “chubby Chinese,” and “stupid.”
After being approached by a lot of people on social media, Healy semi-apologized. “I just feel a little bad and I’m a little bit sorry if I offended you.”
During the same podcast appearance, Healy opened up about slipping into Doja Cat’s DMs and rumors that she was hanging out in white supremacist chat rooms. After the podcast’s release, neither Ice Spice nor Doja Cat called Healy out publicly, but it’s likely they were annoyed by his comments.
During the aforementioned podcast appearance, Healy also spoke about two other of his fellow artists. First, Healy talked about pink. “Did you see Pink being pulled from her career because she looks dyke and that’s now considered queerbaiting?”
When the podcast host asked about Harry Styles, Healy claimed the former One Direction member got away with similar behavior. “He gets a passport, I don’t know … I actually don’t think the gay guys really like it, it’s young girls who think it’s something new, who say, ‘Oh my God’.”
Healy’s podcast comments on Pink and Styles upset many in the LGBTQ+ community, and it’s easy to think the two cast members were angry at him, too.
5 Adam Levine has fallen out with Matty Healy
If you were to ask most people what makes bands successful, they would say writing and performing good songs. In reality, however, the importance of the way a band is marketed is often underestimated.
Before Maroon 5 became famous for the first time, they were still experimenting with the name they wanted to be known by. In this era of their history, the band called themselves Kara’s Flowers and released an album entitled The Fourth World.
The cover art of the band that would become Maroon 5’s early album included pictures of the members in red, green, yellow, and blue boxes. Years later, when The released their single “Me And You Together” in 1975, it was marketed with a very similar image and color scheme.
Maroon 5’s Adam Levine definitely noticed the resemblance and called out Healy’s band on Twitter. “Hey @the1975, are you big ‘Kara’s Flowers’ fans?” It wasn’t long before Healy countered with a tweet that left many people feeling upset with Levine. “I don’t know what the fuck that is, but I love this song about being in a phone booth or whatever it is.”
A few years later, during a performance by The 1975, a fan, obviously clueless about the band’s history, threw a Maroon 5 shirt onto the stage. Without missing a beat, Healy then began singing the lyrics to Maroon 5’s “Payphone,” before seemingly trying to keep the peace by saying, “We love you, Adam.”
4 YUNGBLUD has fallen out with Matty Healy
Following Matty Healy’s aforementioned controversial podcast appearance, Yungblud seemingly called out the 1975 singer in a tweet. “I love listening to three privileged white guys sitting around objectifying a young black artist blowing up. Welcome to your 30s I guess…”
While many people wrote much harsher things about Healy during the backlash to his podcast commenting on social media, he seemed to harbor a grudge against Yungblud.
Healy expressed his anger by mocking Yungblud on Instagram. In a black-and-white video that used a filter to make him look like he was crying and had the word “EMO” written on both cheeks, Healy unleashed a profanity-laced tirade in which he pretended to be Yungblud.
At the end of Healy’s tirade, he poked fun at Yungblud’s stance as an artist. “I don’t stand for things, I stand against things… I just stand against things and they tend to be the most morally obvious things… Fuck patriarchy!”
3 Imagine Dragons feuding with Matty Healy
Just like many bands before them, Imagine Dragons have become hugely successful while being hated by a lot of people at the same time. In 2017, Matty Healy began his feud with Imagine Dargon’s lead singer Dan Reynolds when he attempted one of the band’s biggest hits.
“Songs like Imagine Dragons’ ‘Radioactive’ could just as easily be called ‘Pikachu Banana.’ It is nothing.”
A few years after Healy’s comment, Reynolds uploaded a series of posts to Instagram detailing how hard it was dealing with hatred towards his band. In one of those posts, Reynolds named some of the artists who had offended his band.
“I’ve gotten over the fact that guys in other bands (The 1975, Foster The People, Smashing Pumpkins, Slipknot, etc.) feel the need to badmouth my band for some reason. Actually, I don’t feel angry at them, but rather a sadness that this industry adopts and even celebrates this mentality.”
Not long after Reynolds’ contribution was published, Healy was interviewed for Chicago radio station WKQX. During the ensuing conversation, Healy brought up Reynolds’ contribution and while it seemed like The 1975 didn’t want to be too harsh, it seemed obvious he was upset.
“Have you seen the guy from Imagine Dragons? He just came online recently and he was like, “Everybody breaks my band and says we’re not good enough” or whatever, and he’s like, “Billy Corgan said it, and Matty from The 1975 did said it.” and I thought… brother, I didn’t say that. And even if I said so, why do you care?”
Healy continued, “You’re a millionaire in a huge band. You don’t say oh I’ll do this, and can I be free from criticism? It’s like… no. But that’s not my point. Gosh.” The point wasn’t that Imagine Dragons didn’t… I don’t care.
“When you’re this big – the biggest alternative band in America by radio drama – and you don’t say anything in your music, you just say words…”radioactive, woah-oh-oh-oh-oh”…you know, what I mean?” Healy continued, “What’s the point? If you can tell me what the point is, apart from the escapism.”
2 Noel Gallagher has fallen out with Matty Healy
In recent years there have been very few musicians who seem to have enjoyed insulting people more than Noel Gallagher. Blessed with the ability to insult people in devastating, simple, and gross ways, no one should give Gallagher a reason to turn on them.
Amazingly, Matty Healy once decided to publicly insult Noel Gallagher and bring up the Oasis member’s feud with his brother. According to Healy, Noel and Liam Gallagher both “needed to grow up” and reform Oasis. Still not done, Healy explained his reason why the Gallaghers needed to end their feud.
According to Healy, “There isn’t a child, a person who goes to a High Flying Birds or Liam Gallagher gig that wouldn’t rather go to an Oasis gig.”
In response to Healy’s comments, Liam Gallagher tweeted, “It’s our time to waste, who made him time boss?” While Liam Gallagher’s response was amusing, his response was both simple and epic, as an interviewer informed Noel Gallagher, that Healy was talking about him.
“Oh, that damn idiot with his sagging jaw. What did he say?” When Noel Gallagher was briefed on what Healy had said, he somehow managed to react even more brutally. “He would never have imagined? He needs to check out how shit his band is, and separate.”
1 Azealia Banks has fallen out with Matty Healy
After learning what Matty Healy had said about Ice Spice during a podcast appearance, Azealia Banks was outraged. When Banks chose to vent her anger on social media, what Banks wrote about Healy was incredibly brutal.
“Does Matty Healy know that nobody actually thinks The 1975 makes good music? And that he’s a lame poser with a cliche trash band name that doesn’t really mean anything. He’s obviously so beset by a black girl who doesn’t know anything about him or his music sells more and makes more money than he does.
Banks continued, “Does he know black women are more desirable?” [in] in today’s industry because there’s BIG BUSINESS in female rap? He’s so obviously weak-kneed, thin-cheeked, and damn addicted that it’s easy to catch his crispy ass missing.”
Far from done at this point, Banks continued to call out to Healy in the same post the quote is from. Banks then posted several more Instagram stories, of which Banks literally threw Healy overboard.
In a post urging Taylor Swift to get rid of Healy, Banks claimed that the “The 1975’s” singer was contracting an STD. Still unfinished, Banks wrote that Healy was “a full-fledged incel.”
