Celebrities are sending their thoughts and prayers to Maui amid deadly wildfires.
Bushfires caused by high winds devastated much of Maui on Tuesday, August 8th President Joe Biden to declare that “a major disaster is occurring in the state of Hawaii” and to order the provision of federal assistance.
“Jill and I offer our deepest condolences to the families of those who lost loved ones in the Maui wildfires, and our prayers are with those whose homes, businesses and communities were destroyed,” Biden, 80, said in one White House of Representatives Statement on Wednesday, August 9th. “We are grateful to the brave firefighters and first responders who continue to face danger and put themselves at risk to save lives.”
At the time of publication, 36 people have died as a result of the accident on Maui.
“Lahaina is devastated,” a resident told CNN on Thursday, Aug. 10. “People [are] He jumped into the sea to escape the flames and was rescued by the Coast Guard. All boat owners are urged to rescue people. It’s apocalyptic.”

Matthew McConaughey
The actor teamed up with his eldest son Levi to tell their fans that Baby2Baby is working to help several Maui organizations get victims back on their feet. “These are people, organizations on the ground in Maui who are saying, ‘This is what is needed now,'” McConaughey explained in an Instagram video posted Aug. 15. “So if you want to help, check out Baby2Baby. Look at the work they are doing. Or how you can help in other ways. There is a lot of help that is needed.”
Levi chimed in: “They’re going to need it in the long run, so we appreciate any way you guys can help. Thanks, folks.” The couple noted in the video caption that their family is “funding an emergency relief plane with @Baby2Baby filled with hundreds of thousands more emergency supplies that will have an immediate impact on children and families on Maui.”

“Heartbroken but our faith and mana are strong,” Johnson, who grew up in Hawaii, wrote via Instagram on Aug. 14. “First responders, health teams, hotels, local businesses, local emergency responders and all our local heroes, stay strong – we love you and appreciate you. All of our local families, our ohana, our aiga, stay strong during this devastating time. Resilience and determination are in our DNA. Our ancestors are in our blood. This is us. That’s what we do. I love you.”
The actor ended his post by urging the citizens of Maui to “stay strong” and revealed that “there’s more to come.”
