In July, Kylie Jenner, who is known for adamantly denying that her much-coveted look is anything but good genes, boldly decided to reveal that she had undergone plastic surgery.
This seemed to inspire Ariana Grande, who revealed in a makeup tutorial for Vogue just last week that she had used Botox and lip fillers throughout her career.
“For a long time for me, beauty was about hiding,” she says, and now I feel like that might not be the case.”
As she applies eyeliner, Grande speaks candidly and emotionally about the pressure she faced to undergo cosmetic procedures as a woman in the spotlight.
“When you’re exposed to so many voices at a young age, especially when people have things to say about your appearance from a young age, it’s really hard to know what’s worth listening to and what’s not,” she adds.
“I would use makeup as a camouflage or something to hide. But the older I get, the more I don’t like the intention behind it.”
These confessions from two A-listers with more than 750 million followers between them indicate a sea change when it comes to famous women being authentic about the work they do.
The topic is traditionally taboo, with smaller waists, larger breasts and sculpted jaws often attributed to diets, intensive skin care and hydration.
But knowing what we know about the impact of this blatant deception, I’d say Jenner and Grande’s sudden honesty is long overdue.
We hope it sticks and we see more people with great power and platforms thinking about their influence on others and the idealistic messages they spread to their fans.
