‘A Legend’: Celebrities, Collaborators Pay Tribute to Meat Loaf

News of larger-than-life singer and actor Meat Loaf’s death on Thursday at the age of 74 prompted a spate of tributes from fellow artists and staff on social media.

“We had so much fun with meatloaf when we made Dead Ringer.” Cher tweeted Thursday. “I am so sorry for his family, friends and fans. Am I imagining it, or amazing people die in art every other day?”

“I am shocked and saddened by the sudden death of Meat Loaf,” wrote singer Bonnie Tyler. “He was, as you might imagine, a larger than life character with a voice and stage presence to match, and is one of those rare people who truly was a unique talent and personality.” Tyler’s single “Total Eclipse of the Heart” from the The chart-topping 1983 was written and produced by longtime Meat Loaf collaborator Jim Steinman, who died last April.

Singer Boy George offered his condolences while sharing a humorous anecdote about the late singer on Twitter, saying: Meat Loaf “once turned me on my head in a Chinese restaurant in St Johns Wood.”

“I hope paradise is as you remember it from the dashboard lights, Meat Loaf,” tweeted comedian Stephen Fry. “It was fun doing a sketch with him on Saturday Live way back in the last century.”

Never Gonna Give You Up singer Rick Astley called Meat Loaf “a legend” and shared a snap of the two together.

“The vaults of heaven shall sound from rocks,” wrote the famous composer Andrew Lloyd Webber, adding “Give my best to Jim,” in a nod to Steinman.

News of Meat Loaf’s death was confirmed by the singer’s family in a post on his official Facebook page. A cause of death was not given.
