Eight people have been sentenced to prison for breaching celebrities’ personal information.
The Nanhai District People’s Court in the city of Foshan in Guangdong province found that the defendants, all of whom were high-speed train stations, used their position to sell celebrities’ travel information and ID numbers to others. The information was then sold to more people, with the defendants making over 560,000 yuan (US$77,795) in profit.
The accused were sentenced to between three years and eight months in prison and three years and nine months in prison respectively. They were also fined a total of 567,530 yuan and ordered to delete the information they obtained illegally and apologize publicly.
The court found that the defendants had committed the crime of violating citizens’ personal information. They had disregarded national regulations and unlawfully sold the personal data they had obtained during their work, thereby damaging the public interest.
Both celebrities and ordinary citizens enjoy legal protection of their personal data. However, the illegal sale and unauthorized disclosure of personal information has become increasingly common and has caused significant suffering to society, the court said.
