Lady Gaga appeared in a raw meat dress, hat and boots at the 2010 VMAs. The singer won eight awards that night and she accepted them in her meat dress.

Many were shocked by the bloody looking outfit. The People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) released a statement that said, among other things, “Someone should whisper in her ear that there are more people who are upset about slaughter than are impressed by it – and that means a lot of young people won’t buy her records if she keeps it up.”

The next day, in an interview with Ellen DeGeneres, Gaga said the dress symbolized her support for repealing the “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy that allowed gay people to serve in the military while they were closed .

“If we don’t fight for our rights, pretty soon we’ll have as many rights as the meat on our bones,” she said, according to Billboard.

She added, “It’s certainly not disrespect to someone who is vegan or vegetarian.”
