Newly announced ‘Doctor Who’ star Ncuti Gatwa received a loud round of applause from the TV Bafta audience as he took to the stage to share the screenplay comedy award with his ‘Sex Education’ co-star, Aimee Lou Wood to hand over.
Mr Gatwa said he was “finally able to breathe” after the announcement.
The 29-year-old will become the 14th doctor on the hit ` series after Jodie Whittaker announced she was leaving Doctor Who last July.
Rwanda-born Scottish actor Gatwa played the lead role of Eric Effiong in the hugely popular Netflix series Sex Education, about socially awkward high schooler Otis (Asa Butterfield) and his sex therapist Jean (Gillian Anderson).
Speaking at Virgin Media TV Baftas, he said: “I’m really happy to be able to talk about this now because I was cast in February and I’ve kept it a secret ever since.
“So it’s nice to finally be able to breathe. But also very nervous.
“It’s an incredibly iconic role and an incredibly iconic show.
“I just hope I live up to that. I have some very, very big shoes to fill, so I’m just hoping to fill them in.”
In 2020, Gatwa was named winner of the Actor category at the Scottish Baftas for his role in sex education and was nominated for Best Male Performance in a Comedy Program at this year’s Bafta TV Awards.
