Southampton owners Sport Republic acquire majority stake in Turkish club Göztepe

Sport Republic, the owners of Premier League club Southampton, has become the first foreign investor in Turkish football after acquiring a 70 percent stake in second division club Göztepe, the London-based investment firm announced on Friday.

Göztepe’s existing shareholders retain a 30 per cent stake in the club, which was relegated from the top flight last season.

Sport Republic is looking to build a portfolio of influential stakes in football clubs after buying Southampton in January, taking an 80 per cent stake in the club.

“Being the first foreign investor in Turkish football brings additional responsibility and attention,” said Rasmus Ankersen, CEO of Sport Republic and newly appointed chairman of Goztepe.

“We know it will not be without challenges, but we are committed to our long-term vision of realizing Goztepe’s potential.”
