Passport vs. Atlas Cross Sport: Power Games
Honda passport
With “just right” proportions and impressive driving characteristics, the Honda Passport is the right vehicle for many families. This brand new Passport model debuted for the 2019 model year and is receiving some robust updates for 2022, plus it looks more like the recently updated Honda Ridgeline pickup truck. It is available with HDP (Honda Performance Development) accessories to add personality.
The Passport offers space for five passengers and lots of luggage and has a well-stocked and award-winning 3.5-liter V6 engine and a smooth-shifting 9-speed automatic transmission. There is no question why it holds its value year after year.
The sophisticated AWD system with torque vectoring and intelligent traction management with 4 modes is an outstanding feature that gives the Passport a real talent for light off-road driving. It is able to fight sand, mud and snow.
The big update for 2022 is the TrailSport model. Honda’s first entry into the TrailSport sub-brand, which initially mainly focuses on off-road styling. It uses a slightly wider track and more aggressive off-road tires, and adds a unique grille, wheels, and front and rear -rons. Unfortunately, it doesn’t come with any major mechanical upgrades, though Honda has indicated there will be more off-road c -abilities.
The basic Sport model includes -ple CarPlay and Android Auto as well as an 8-inch infotainment system. Essentially a shorter, two-row version of the Honda Pilot, the Passport has a spacious cabin thanks to its generous width and traditional upright SUV styling. This more boxy sh -e also translates into plenty of cargo space with a c -acity of 77.9 cubic feet with the second row tucked away.
Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport
The Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport is not much smaller than the closely related 3-row Atlas. There is plenty of space for passengers and their equipment in its blocky housing. Although the materials in the interior are simpler, the digital cockpit available on the upper panels is impressive. The 10-inch display is sharp and highly configurable.
The 8-inch infotainment system was upgraded this year, while the base model gets a 6.5-inch unit. Front collision warning, blind spot monitoring and rear cross traffic warning are standard, while the lane departure warning system and Travel Assist (ad -tive cruise control with lane centering) are included in medium and higher equipment variants.
Buyers can choose between a 235 hp 2.0-liter turbo 4-cylinder or a 276 hp 3.6-liter V6. Both mate with a well-behaved 8-speed automatic transmission in FWD or AWD. Every engine is pretty thirsty, with the 2.0-liter average of 22 mpg and the 3.6-liter managing just 20 mpg with FWD or 19 mpg with AWD. Both deliver decent acceleration, with the V6’s main benefit being pulling up to 5,000 pounds. The Atlas drives itself full, but steering that is too light does not make it so sporty to drive.

Which one is right for me?
The Honda Passport 2021 is more spacious and robust, which gives it a certain off-road c -ability. With its smooth-running V6 drive with 9-speed automatic, it is a good companion both in the city and on the trail.
If you want a vehicle with a little more technology and like the digital cockpit offered by VW, opt for the 2022 Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport. But you know that both the Turbo 4 and V6 options are pretty thirsty.
